Start Tweeting Today and Keep it Going

How often are you tweeting? How many followers do you have and how often are they tweeting? What are your retweet rates? What the heck is tweeting?

“Tweeting” means making use of the online social media utility known as Twitter, which allows registered users to post public statements of 140 characters or less, one at a time. On the surface, that sounds simple. But during the few short years since its inception, Twitter has become an online institution, and one of key pillars of a well-run social media campaign. If you aren’t yet participating in the world of tweets, retweets and hashtags, it may be a good idea to find out what an active twitter feed can do for your online presence.

This can involve extensive research. Which, can take a long time. It’s a bit easier to just go to twitter.com, start an account (it’s free), and post your first tweet, which can take about 25 seconds.

There. That wasn’t so hard, right? Before long, you’ll be building a list of followers and polishing the wit and relevance of your tweets till they shine like irresistible little textual pearls. When it comes to incorporating Twitter into your social media strategy, starting a feed isn’t the difficult part. The challenge lies in maintaining, improving and expanding your feed to the point where it actually increases your customer base and builds your bottom line. Here are a few tips.

First, make sure your tweets are funny, colorful and relevant. Your tweets should be like the bon mots you drop at an important cocktail party. Use the stage well, and be clever. Don’t just make noise.

Second, tweets are kind of like poetry, when you think about it. And a basic rule of creative writing applies to tweeting as well: be concrete, not abstract. Dull: December 26, half price Christmas decorations, available through January. Better: Christmas is only 364 days away! Be ready and save your cookie dough by scooping up our remaining decorations at half price.

Finally, stay active. Frequent tweets that are consistently original and clever will build a following. Inconsistent tweets, no matter how perfect, won’t find a foothold among your target audience.
